(SAN DIEGO, CA) – For the third straight year, Barona Creek Golf Club was rated as the number five golf course in California by Golfweek magazine, behind landmark properties Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, Pasatiempo and Rustic Canyon.
Golfweek releases their list of top golf courses each spring. The list is compiled by raters who play courses around the country and rate courses from a comprehensive and stringent rating system.
San Diego’s Barona Creek Golf Club has been consistently ranked as a top course in these rankings since the course opened in 2001.

In addition, Barona Creek was third ranked resort course behind Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill and 19th best in the United States.
“We are extremely pleased that Barona Creek Golf Club has continued to gain the respect from the national golf raters for Golfweek magazine. Being ranked as one of the top courses in the state and in the nation is an honor for our Tribe,” said Rhonda Welch-Scalco, chairwoman of the Barona Band of Mission Indians. “We have worked hard to make Barona Creek a challenging experience and we are so thrilled that our course continues to receive such high accolades. As the host of the Nationwide Tour Championships this year and again in 2010, we believe that the nationally acclaimed status of the Barona Creek Golf Club will just continue to grow.”
Over the past year, Barona Creek has made several new additions to this championship quality golf course, while keeping its classic design elements.
Under the direction of the Barona Tribal Council and course director Don King, world-renowned golf course bunker construction specialists, Jeff Bradley and Chris Hunt, were brought on board to work with golf course architect Todd Eckenrode on bunker enhancements, adding a series of new bunkers. The team is credited with several Top 100 Ranked courses including Cape Kidnappers Golf Course (Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand), Sand Hills (Mullen, Nebraska), Friars Head Golf Club (Baiting Hollow, New York) and Bandon Trails Golf Course (Bandon, Oregon).
“The 12 new bunkers and our expansion of two existing bunkers are extremely unique to Southern California, with intricate details, jagged edging, and flashed fences that highlight the playing strategies for each hole,”explained King. “These bunkers form the transition from the native landscaping to the turf zones, bringing nature into the golf as opposed to keeping it on the periphery which adds to the inherent beauty and natural ruggedness of Barona Creek.”
In addition, 12 new "tournament" tees were added to the course. The angles of these were again intended to strengthen the strategies of each hole as well as the yardage. The risk-reward elements are heightened and many offer higher vantage points to better take in each hole and surrounding vistas. As a result, play from the new "tournament" tees is very dramatic and challenging, yet still requires the shotmaking and thoughtful play of the more forward tees.
Barona Creek Golf Club is a par 72 course that is now extended to 7,448 yards with more than 100 multi-fingered bunkers and a series of lakes and ponds that are connected to the area’s naturally fed streams. The golf course also has more than 170 mature native oak trees transplanted from other regions of the Barona Indian Reservation. Making use of the subtly undulating terrain, prominent rock outcroppings and gentle elevation changes preserve the lands’ unique characteristics. The combination of both natural and strategic elements of the design make Barona Creek Golf Club one of the most challenging and thought provoking golf courses in San Diego.
